what is the difference between welding and soldering?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

As I understand it, welding is using extreme heat to bind two metals together and soldering uses a third metal to bind them together.

--quote--
Welding: fastening two pieces of metal together by softening with heat and applying pressure
--endquote--

--quote--
Soldering: Soldering is a process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint, the filler metal
--endquote--

I knew the difference in process, but still searched for a good definition and the below is from wisegeek.com

"Soldering is a process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint."

"Welding is the process of joining metals by melting the parts and then using a filler to form a joint."

In other words So during welding, the metals are joined by melting part of them with filler metal/alloy.

In soldering, only the filler metal/alloy is melted make a joint. So usually soldering occurs at a lower temperature than welding.
