What is the difference between the G1 and the Magic?

Any big differences between the T-Mobile G1 and the Magic Android phone? Which one is better and which one is cooler?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The G1 (AKA HTC Dream), was the first smart phone on the market with the Android OS. The HTC Magic (AKA MyTouch and MyTouch3G) was the second handset released to operate under the Android OS.

Both phone currently use Android 1.6 (Donut) for their current Android release. However, if you root the phones you can install custom built "ROMS" which may be ran on the phones.

As far as technical data, the phones are closely matched. The G1 has a full QWERTY keyboard, where as the MyTouch (Magic) uses the touchscreen for it's keyboard.

-Both phones contain a 528Mhtz ARM11 CPU.
-Both phones support up to a 16GB microSD card for storage. The Magic comes with a 4gb card, the G1 with a 1gb card.
-The HTC Magic contains 192/288mb RAM 512mb ROM for internal storage, which is slightly higher then the G1's 192mb DDR SDRAM.
-Both phones contain a 320x480 HVGA LED Screen
-For all intents and purposes, the phones cover predominately the same signal range with the Magic having a tri-band EDGE/GPRS and the G1 only having a dual-band EDGE/GPRS.
-The Magic weighs 42 grams less then the G1.
-Both phones have Multi-touch capacitive touchscreen display, volume controls, 3-axis accelerometer
-Both phones contain a 3.2 auto focus camera capable of video

If you don't mind having just a touch screen (much like the iPhone) for typing, then the Mytouch (HTC Magic) is for you. If you need a full keyboard, I would suggest forgoing the G1 and shooting for the T-Mobile myTouch 3g Slide, which was the successor to the myTouch. It has a full keyboard and much better technical stats.

The G1 which is the first Android phone to hit store shelves, while the Magic followed afterwards. Both mobile devices was manufactured by HTC, however one of major difference that was observed between the G1, is the fact that it has a slide out physical QWERTY keyboard, while the HTC Magic have none of it. Furthermore, in terms of mobile carriers the Google 1 is under the wings of T Mobile, whereas the HTC Magic is solely under Vodafone.

With regards to design, the Magic is tops compared to G1 in the sense that it is much more attractive and thinner, thus making it easy to fit in ones pocket. Accordingly, "the Magic has an accelerometer for autorotation and the screen has the option of handwriting recognition or the onscreen QWERTY keyboard."
