What is the difference between the common Pig and the Pennywell Miniature Pigs (teacup pigs)?

A friend of mine is on the two year long waiting list to buy a Pennywell Miniature Pig from the Pennywell farm. She said she does not mind waiting longer to get it from the farm. I like the pet and can understand why she does not mind waiting for that time, but apart from its size, what makes it different from the common pig?

The common pig when fully grown can weigh up to seven or 800 pound compared to a 90-lb teacup pig. A teacup pig is indeed miniature. It is unfortunate though that even breeders have difficulty predicting the eventual size of a piglet.

Pigs can grow for 3 to 4 years and may produce offspring before reaching its full size. Because of this, parent size cannot provide an accurate estimate of a piglet's future size and it is possible that pet buyers will be misled.

Nancy Shepherd of Pig O' My Heart Potbellies said that people should expect a mature, purebred potbellied pig to weigh between 60 and 175 pound. She also claims never to have seen a naturally small "teacup" pig. She said the small pigs she has seen appears unhealthy and stunted, lack good bone structure, conformation and general body condition.

However, there are some pig sellers that still claim that teacup potbellied pigs will top out a twenty-five to fifty-pounds and will grow not taller than six inches.

The penneywell ones are not worth the wait and price IMO. They are 75lb pigs, teacup when born I guess but not that small. I raise micro minis, biggest ones are 50lbs and have adults that will be 25lbs full grown. Pigs do grow for 2-3 yrs so it is important to see pics of parents and their ages. I know people lie and scam these little guys so just be careful! they are great pets and so much fun though. my site is www.dragonflyhollands.com/contact.html
