What is the difference between sensual and sexy, or are they the same?

In my dance class the teacher always says that certain moves are sensual, but not sexy. She also says that she doesn't like teaching younger girls certain moves because they don't know the difference between sensual and sexy. The more I thought about this, I do have an idea but don't know the difference for sure.

Sensual is an emotional feeling, sexy is a look.

Hello. Yes, I think there is a difference, and some people just have the knack to recognize the difference. For example, you can see an older woman, who is attractive, has a lovely femine aura about her, and carries herself beautifully. She would be considered sensual. Sensual people usually don't have to prove they are sexy, their manner is some what softer. Seeing some one who looks sexy, they usually have dressed in a manner that sends out certain signals, or their manner is somewhat more flirtatious. It seems to be, just that little degree of softness, that makes the difference. So the dancing teacher is correct, because she just knows the difference, as she can see it. Pretty confusing, but it is hard to explain!!

Very interesting question! I would say both are very similar but also have poignant differences. I'd say both definitely have positive connotations rather than "piece of a**" or even "hot" can be construed in the wrong light.

Sexy obviously pertains to sex, a look that reminds them of sex or makes someone desire them. The word "sensual" is filled with passion, depth, and even love to me while "sexy" is more so an empty word. Sensual really describes a moment of passion or a passionate male or female while sexy is more how someone looks. I feel that sensual also describes action, while sexy is more of a looks thing.

Thanks for the question, it made me think!
