What is the difference between mitral valve prolapse and mitral valve regurgitation?

With mitral valve prolapse, the valve "leaves" are billowed back into the atrium (it is kind of like a sail under a full wind). If the prolapse is bad enough to prevent normal valve operation, or there are other conditions in effect, mitral valve regurgitation can occur, where the blood from the ventricle flows back into the atrium.
Mitral valve regurgitation itself can cause some problems, such as pulmonary edema due to the increased backpressure in the lungs, atrial and ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement), and others.

M$"Mitral valve prolapse is frequently associated with mild mitral regurgitation, where blood aberrantly flows from the left ventricle into the left atrium during systole. Occasionally MVP patients experience severe regurgitation, often due to chordae tendineae rupture."
