What is the difference between Indy Car and Formula One racing? I've never really understood the difference.

The main difference is the rules, USA vs. Global. Indy is based on the Indy 500 with four left turns. Nothing at all like the driving experience of the fans. The formula one championship how ever has each race in a different country using courses that match the natural terrain like that driven by the fans on the way to the race. That is up hill, down hill, with left and right turns, braking an accelerating.
The Grand Prix choses the World Champion of drivers.

M$F1 cars are a bit smaller, considerably lighter and have far more powerful engines.
Unlike Indy Car each team is responsible for designing and building its own cars. They are also far more advanced in design, using Carbon Brakes, advanced engine management systems, and several different engine manufacturers.
There are other differences... there are no ovals in F1, and the points system is different. Indycar is considered a domestic motorsport series (with a few races in different countries) whereas F1 is truly a global sport.
