What is the difference between Google Maps and Google Earth? Is one program more advanced then the other?
I have always used Google Maps but am starting to see more advertisement for Google Earth and am wondering why I should make the switch to using Google Earth. Does it have more options available when searching for a specific place, or narrowing down where something is located? Is it a quicker more precise application, versus Google Maps? How long has Google Earth been around and is it ultimately fazing Google Maps out? Is Google Earth free or is there a free option and a option that requires a certain monthly or one time charge? Any and all information available is much appreciated!!

Google Maps is a web-based mapping service while Google Earth requires a client download. The underlying map files for both Google Earth and Google Maps are in KML format which is an XML based tag structure. So what you see on the screen is likely to be similar as the images come from the same database.
What can be done with the images is the difference between the two. Google Earth allows you to make your own maps using Google Map Maker. Many off-roaders tag their locations on GPS device then move the coordinates to Google Earth. On Google Earth, you can now explore the Moon and Mars in 3D.
Given that Google Earth is a client application you are likely to get better response than having to download the map data on Google Maps. There are also restrictions on where Google Maps is available. I use Google Maps to search for locations and Google Earth to explore the world in 3D (a digital globe so to speak).
