What is the difference between fingerspelling and sign language?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Sign language uses a single sign to indicate a complete word or concept, while fingerspelling uses the signs for each letter of the alphabet to spell out the word. So the word "father" for example could be either a single sign that involves bringing the hand to the head, or it could be the 6 signs for each letter in "father".
