What is the difference between fantasy and science fiction?

Is the television show Fantasy Island considered more fantasy or more science fiction and why? Is there a fine line between the two genres? Explain the differences and the similarities between the two in a way that a novice would understand.

It could be said that the genre of science fiction is a subset of fantasy, although they are really dealt with separately. Fantasy as a genre generally proposes the impossible as reality. While classic fantasy might be about fairy god mothers, pixies and elves, modern fantasy also includes things like super heroes, vampires and werewolves. All of these things are seen as being impossible in real life and while there are still often explanations as to how they are possible to make them more believable or at least coherent within their fictional reality.

Science fiction (scifi) can be specifically regarded as fantasy that is plausible or theoretically possible. The general premise is that anything that happens in a scifi reality could be possible in our own reality. The fact that this isn't always the case is what blurs the lines between science fiction and fantasy. Aliens, space travel, advanced technology are all popular themes within scifi. The Six Million Dollar Man is a good example of an early television science fiction show. The idea that they could enhance a man with machinery is something that scientists are still working on today. Unfortunately the distinction can often become difficult when science fiction writers bend the rules of reality to make a science fiction concept feasible, turning it essentially into fantasy as it could never exist in our reality.

Fantasy Island is generally considered completely within the fantasy genre. As the island could fulfil any fantasy it would be highly improbable that such a thing would be possible in our reality. A show like Lost on the other hand is awkwardly placed between science fiction and fantasy as the events within the show seem completely impossible in our reality, but it is always presented in a way that suggests there is a completely plausible and scientifically grounded reason for everything that happens. Because of the mystery behind what really happens it can't really be determined to be one or the other.

There are a few differences between science fiction and fantasy. Both are fiction – or make believe. Science fiction is typically based in the science genre. For instance, movies that take people to the center of the earth, or to outer space, would both be based on data from science. Whereas flying horses and unicorns, or fairies would be based on imagination and therefore fantasy.

Fantasy Island was a fantasy. The show was set on an island where Mr. Roarke would fulfill a person’s fantasy, or their romantic desires. However, while the person would fantasize one ending, many times the ending was not what they were looking for. This show had nothing to do with science or any scientific facts.

Many of us were raised on the fantasy of the classic Fairy Tale cartoons: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, 101 Dalmations, Dumbo, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. More current fantasies are: Mulan, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King.

One of the more famous Science Fiction series would be Star Trek. The original series starred William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy played Spock, a Vulcan. This series was set in outer space, and was definitely a science fiction series.
