What is the difference between cologne and perfume?

Are they the same thing, just with different names for the different genders they are made for? Or is there some chemical difference that leads to the different names?

What's The Difference Between
Perfume and Cologne?

Perfumes, colognes and other body scents trigger our strongest, fastest sense -- the sense of smell.

Perfume is the strongest and therefore the longest lasting fragrance available. Just a bit will net you hours of scent -- days actually. Cologne is just a bit weaker and is sometimes mischaracterized as a men's product.

Perfume

To talk perfume it is almost a necessity to go to the source of the perfume industry, France. The French didn't discover perfumes (the Egyptians did) but the French turned perfume into an industry and they turned perfume making into a science.

The most important discovery made by the French perfumers was a way to overcome the fact that every scent will, over time, fade and the corresponding fact that some scents fade faster than others. The French answer to this was layered fragrances -- three layers, to be exact. In the perfume industry these layers are called notes: there is a top note that consists of the most volatile scent that will last for only a few hours (perhaps, to get you through your morning break), a middle note made of a less volatile scent that will last you until you're ready to punch out at the end of the work day and the base note that will follow you into your shower or tub just before bed.

A slight down side to this French solution to the all day fragrance problem is that each 'note' is a different scent, so your scent will be a bit different (but still fabulous) at each stage.

Not just a matter of taste! There are certainly many, many perfumes available that are not French and that will provide you with many hours of beautiful scent. Its a matter of taste, of course; which scent appeals to YOU and which one is preferred by those close to you. Its also, however, a matter of expense! The best French perfume will be prohibitively expensive and out of the question for those without a lot of money to spend on beauty products while many perfumes (as well as other scented products) will be well within their reach.

Cologne

Cologne is a single-scented fragrance (as opposed to layered perfumes) that is somewhat less potent than perfume. Most colognes for women come in spray applicators but some brands of cologne are also available in a splash.

Cologne is milder than perfume, true, but can be easily over-applied (especially as a spray) to produce a too-bold scent. Most women prefer to suggest their presence in a room with a whisper of scent, using too much of any fragrance can turn that whisper into a deafening scream. The obvious way to avoid this is to use less than you think you need and carry a purse size with you to 'touch-up' during the day. Another way to apply an appropriately subtle fragrance is, before you dress, spray your cologne to create a mist in front of you, close your eyes, and then walk through the mist; one trip will be all you need.

Other fragrance products! Your world of fragrance choices does not end with perfume and cologne; consider the alternatives.

How to Understand the Difference Between Cologne and Perfume

Wearable scents come in many different strengths. A perfume is not the same as a cologne, although it might smell the same and have the same proportions of essential oils. Knowing whether the scent that you own is a perfume or a cologne will help you determine the best way to wear it.

Step
1
Learn the different concentrations of essential oils in perfume, cologne and other types of scents. Perfume contains the highest concentration of essential oils to alcohol (about 30% by volume). Cologne contains the lowest (about 5% to 8%).
Step
2
Understand the price differences between perfume and cologne. Because perfume contains more essential oils and is more concentrated, it costs far more than cologne.
Step
3
Perfume lasts longer than cologne. Because perfume is so highly concentrated, a few drops applied to pulse points and your skin will last for as long as 6 to 8 hours. Cologne needs to be renewed every 2 hours or so.
Step
4
Apply more cologne than you would perfume. Cologne is designed to be splashed or sprayed on because of its low concentration of essential scent oils. Because of this, an 8-ounce bottle of cologne will not last as long as a 1-ounce bottle of perfume.

On the spectrum of fragrance types, perfume is at the top, and cologne is toward the bottom. Cologne is a much weaker concentration of scent than perfume. It contains a higher percentage of the base liquid alcohol and a smaller amount of fragrance than perfume. Because of this, cologne is usually much less expensive. Although, perfume provides a longer-lasting scent which means it doesn't have to be reapplied as often.

Cologne is often mislabeled as a "perfume for men" so women avoid using it. In reality, you should use your skin type to decide which type of fragrance will work best for you. People with oily skin tend to lose scent faster so they should stick with fragrances of higher concentration, like perfumes. Drier skin types should use cologne or splash to avoid an over-powering fragrance.

Basically, cologne - or eau d'cologne - is a watered-down perfume. The perfume has a much stronger concentration of aromatic compounds in the solvent. Eau d'toilette is in-beteewn perfume and eau d'cologne.

Cologne and Perfume are both different kinds of fragrances. Basically, a cologne (is water and alcohol based) usually does not last as long in scent as a perfume (which is oil based), making the perfume stronger than the cologne. Perfumes are a mixture of fragrant essential oils and aroma compounds. Also, perfume is generally for women, whereas cologne is typically for men.

Perfume is the more concentrated form of the same scent (hence more expensive). Cologne, or eau de toilette (aka 'toilet water') is a more diluted form of the same scent, but since it's diluted it's cheaper.

Because all perfume is mixed with alcohol, it will evaporate after being put on your skin. Only the base note will survive and will stay for a while. The base note is what will be left lingering in the air after you have left the room. Cologne has much more alcohol than perfume and is not as strong. Cologne will not linger in the air as long as perfume, although it will still leave a scent that lasts. The main difference between perfume and cologne is the price for the bottle and how it is applied to the skin.

Colognes and perfumes are solutions of fragrance oil in alcohol. Colognes and perfumes differ in the percentage of perfume oil and alcohol. The higher the concentration of fragrance oil, the longer the perfume lasts. Cologne is usually a 3-6 percent solution fragrance oil in a 70 percent grade alcohol. Perfume usually contains 15-25 percent fragrance oil in an 80 percent grade alcohol.

Perfume (or eau de perfume) is oil based.. The scents are mixed with an oil to thin them, which means it stays on your skin much better.
Cologne (or eau de cologne or eau de toilette) are water based. The scents are mixed with water to thin them, but it means they wear off much faster and don't stick to your skin as well.
The smell is given off from scents when it evaporates. Thats why you put it on points like your neck or wrists... There is a lot of blood in these areas, which heats up the scent faster, causing it to evaporate. Water based scents (cologne) evaporate much faster than an oil base (perfume). Of course, you can still have a very strong smelling cologne, or a very weak perfume, based on how much scent there is compared to the water/oil, but the difference is the rate it evaporates.
A roll-on scent (If you've ever seen them, it's kind of like a deodorant or lipstick.. it's in a tube) usually isn't very strong, but it evaporates very slowly, meaning the scent lasts much longer. It's neither a perfume or a cologne really... Just a scent.
Cologne is typically the name of a water-based scent for males, and eau de toilette is water-based scent for females, though they can be used interchangeably.

Cologne is lighter: perfume is more concentrated and will stay on your skin for longer. It will also have a deeper fragrance than cologne.
