An AFCI(Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker is designed to interrupt the circuit if an arc fault is detected, aricing is when current jumps through the air from one circuit to another or from one part of a circuit to another, and a GFI/GFCI(Ground Fault Interrupter or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker is designed to interrupt the circuit if there is an abnormal current difference in the hot and ground circuits. They use different electrical measurements to determine if the circuit is in a dangerous state and then break the circuit before they can ignite a fire.
