What is the difference between a yam and a sweet potato?

Where would I find information on whether a yam or a sweet potato is better tasting? Where would I find recipes to prepare yam and sweet potato? How would I find out if more people make yams or sweet potatoes with their holiday dinner?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The terms are often used interchangeably but that's not right. Yams are actually an unrelated African vegetable that is hard to find in the US. So don't worry about them, find a nice recipe for sweet potatoes. The orange variety are more moist, and flavorful than the white fleshed ones. The orange ones are often called "yams" although they aren't. Bake them and serve them with butter and chopped garlic, or go sweet and bake them with brown sugar or maple syrup - yum!

The quotes below might help you:
'Yam is the common name for some species in the genus Dioscorea'
"The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) has traditionally been referred to as a yam in parts of the United States and Canada, but it is not part of the Dioscoreaceae family.'
'The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the family Convolvulaceae.'
'The sweet potato is only distantly related to the potato (Solanum tuberosum). The softer, orange variety is often called a yam in parts of North America, a practice intended to differentiate it from the firmer, white variety.'
