What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?

I live in Kentucky near Rosine, the official "home" of bluegrass music. Of course, everyone here plays the fiddle more or less. I know it looks the same as a violin, is it really the same? Are these really the same musical instrument, but with different names based on the type of music that is played with them? Or are there some notable differences between the two?

People just nickname a violin a "fiddle" when the violin is used for country or folk music.
Violins are used in classical music, fiddles are used in country music, etc. They are exactly the same instruments but just being played in a different style.
A fiddle is sometimes tuned differently than a violin. The instrument itself is the same though. The difference between the two is the different types of music they play. Violin is more classical, when a fiddle is more old-time, Irish, and Cajun.

A violin is played in sync with an orchestra and a fiddle is a violin played solo, or as part of a southern band The word "fiddle" is just a term to describe a stringed instrument, mostly a violin. A fiddle and a violin are the same physical instrument. The only difference is how the instrument is played.

To answer your question, I did a little bit of internet research. The general consensus seems to be that the fiddle and the violin are one and the same instrument. The experts seem to believe that the difference is not in the instrument, but in the PLAYER. (I thought that was really interesting.)

Some players prefer to flatten their bridge when using the instrument as a fiddle. When they do this, they can play two strings at the same time.

Fiddle is just a slang term for a violin. There is no difference between the instruments. People who would call a violin a fiddle probably refer to it that way when talking about country or bluegrass music.
