Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The two words are considered synonyms by the Merriam Webster online dictionary (see http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/emotion and http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/feeling).

However, the two terms are sometimes used differently. For example, 'feeling' could be used to describe a conscious sense that something is a particular way without necessarily having objective evidence (e.g. 'I had a feeling she was being truthful.'). Such a feeling is not necessarily an emotion.

'Emotion' is typically used as an overall descriptor for a class of "conscious mental reactions" (Merriam Webster online dictionary) including love, jealousy, fear, anger, etc. In this sense, 'feeling' does not have to be a specific emotion, or even any emotion whatsoever.

To summarize, there is a large overlap between the two terms, hence they are considered synonymous, however, there are feelings that are not emotions. Thus, 'feeling' encompasses 'emotion' but not vice versa.

I agree with what you have said. Perhaps a good way to put your summary is that emotions are a subset of feelings?

The Psychology Of Emotions, Feelings and Thoughts
Module by: Mark Pettinelli.

"Emotion is more similar to conscious thought than feelings are to conscious thought. Although emotion and feeling can be described as unconscious thought, one of them is going to be more similar to conscious thought. Feelings are more like sensations, when you touch something you get a feeling. Therefore feelings are faster than emotions and thought, because when you touch something there is a slight delay before you can think of something about it (thought). Emotion is therefore just unconscious thought. Actually it would better be described as unconscious feeling."
