What is the difference between a clitoral and vaginal orgasm?

It is my understanding that women can have two different types of orgasms. I have heard that some women are not able to have both. Is this true? What are the differences in having a clitoral orgasm verses a vaginal orgasm? Can a woman tell the difference when she is having each type? Which type of orgasms is the easiest to achieve and most common?

First off…I did NOT mean to vote this question down…I swear…I am apparently having some sort of issue telling the two buttons apart on these sister sites…so sorry…

Technically they aren’t ‘different’ types of orgasms, the experience are different which lead for a different story to tell and a different sensation to feel. However in this case vaginal versus clitoral there is a distinction that was made popular by Sigmund Freud. He would link orgasms to our psychological development. As many may know a clitoral orgasm is brought on by stimulating the clitoris. Whereas a vaginal orgasm is brought on by vaginal penetration. Freud said that clitoral orgasms were for the young and immature; however a vaginal orgasm showed a healthy female sexual response. This theory has been discounted but there are still a few male researchers developing this idea. Another thing that is considered a ‘problem’ with this theory is it doesn’t describe how the orgasms feel; it focuses on how the orgasms are achieved.

With that said, I used to work in an adult shop and there people would come in and ask this question all the time. We had to do some research while being employed with that company and we found that clitoral orgasms are achieved easier, by far. Vaginal orgasms are more difficult to achieve for most, but at times when you get used to your lover and they understand your body, they are able to hit all the right spots resulting in more success with this type of orgasm.

Lastly, most women that I have spoken to are able to tell the difference between the two orgasms. They say a clitoral orgasm feels more powerful and uncontrollable, whereas a vaginal orgasm comes from deep within and can be felt in the stomach. Of course this is just opinion from others personal experiences, so that isn’t fact.

(I just thought this picture looked nifty :-p )

Hope this answers your question to some degree.

Great explanation @tealmyster! One thing that I think should be added to that is that women who have had a full or partial hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus or surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries) and were notably able to experience vaginal orgasms prior to the surgery have reported that they can no longer feel this sensation or achieve vaginal orgasm. From a scientific standpoint, these claims make a lot of sense, since one of the physical traits of vaginal orgasm is uterine contractions.

I think the original quote "This theory has been largely discounted, although there are still a few curious (and not surprisingly male) researchers desperately clinging to the idea." is more exact

First off, I did not mean to go to this sister site. My mommy and daddy would kill if they knew I'm here. I swear . . . honest . . . OK OK. I'm lying. But I'm not lying about making a comment here at 2 AM so my mommy and daddy won't catch me. No way would I let Firefox remember my password for this.

Alrighty, I'm not here to giggle along with @rsunset327. I just want to inform you about kegel exercises that could help people with orgasms.

Sigmund Freud was the first to state there are two different types of Orgasms for women. Alfred Kinsey had disagreed and claimed woman only have one type of Orgasm. Nowadays, depending on what you read you will find a different answer ranging up to 8 different types of Orgasms.

Time for us ladies to chime in (hehe).
I have been married for 15 years and personally believe there is just one type of Orgasm. Some days the Orgasm is better than other days. I have also found that once you get comfortable, with your partner, and in your own skin, Orgasms get much better.

I remember years ago, thinking "What is the Big deal" and thinking sex was mostly enjoyable for men and boy was I wrong. Once you get comfortable in your own skin, and telling your partner what feels good and what doesn't, and just when you think there is no possible way for Orgasm's to get better, they do. Orgasm's for woman can be amazing.

Types of Female Orgasm Research shows that women can have at least three types of orgasm: clitoral, vaginal, or blended. Most women attain orgasm by having their clitoris stimulated (a clitoral orgasm), while others may reach an intense, deep orgasm involving their uterus and reproductive system (a vaginal orgasm), especially during G-spot stimulation. Still other women may experience a blended orgasm, a combination of the two, from having both their clitoris and vagina stimulated at the same time. The vulval and uterine contractions that occur often result in this being experienced as the most powerful of the three types. In some women, female ejaculation (the release of a prostatic fluid-like substance) may accompany vaginal or combined orgasm(s).

speaking from experience and practice, i used to have only clitorial(multiply)orgasms, but i read in cosmopalitan of all mags about this awesome G-spot orgasm and how to acheive, i now have multiply and blended which are wonderful, the tecnique is to stimulate the g spot ,which is a velvetey patch, which actuallty imflames or swellls with stimulation which also produces fluids.,the best way to locate ones g-spot.is to lay flat on her belly and have partner insert finger palm down rub back in forth creates the warm velvetey patch to enlarge and become senitive and eager for the great climate, its great!the best way i found to have the blended is getting attention to the clit and g-spot at the same time,,oral is a helpful tool in this case
