What is the difference between a child that is just normally hyper and a child with ADHD?
How can I tell if my child is just full of energy or has ADHD? Where is the line between the two drawn?

There is a big difference between a child who is just normally hyper and a child with ADHD. Only a psychologist or Primary Care Physician can accurately diagnose a child with ADHD. That diagnosis is only made after reviews of multiple accounts of the child’s behavior and thorough examinations of the child and his behavior. It is not an arbitrary decision but is rather a medical diagnosis.

Health care providers, such as pediatricians or child psychologists can diagnose ADHD with the help of standard guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The diagnosis involves gathering information from several sources, including school, caregivers and parents. The health care provider will consider how a child's behavior compares with that of other children the same age.

A child who is full of energy is able to focus on one activity at a time without getting distracted. That child may be very energetic but is able to focus on one task at a time. That child does not have a chemical imbalance in his brain and doesn’t need treatment for ADHD.
A child who has ADHD is not able to focus on one activity at a time without getting distracted. The child may have a lot of energy but is more likely to wander from activity to activity rather than just being very energetic. That child does have a chemical imbalance in his brain and does need treatment for ADHD.
I wish you and your child the best of luck and hope you found this information helpful.
