A barber shop specializes in men's hair and a beautician or salon specializes in men and women's hair. More often women. Since beauticians spend most of their day cutting styling and coloring women's hair, that get good at that. Barbers spend all day working on men's haircuts, styles and cutting hair with clippers. Just like riding a bike in a way, the more you do something the better you get.
After doing pretty much the same thing day in and day out you become great at it. Men will occasionally go to a salon, but for the most part many men prefer a barber shop.
It is not always the case, but more often than not women work in salons and men work at barber shops. again, I am generalizing. Some men feel more comfortable getting their hair cut from another man. I know quite a few men that for some reason feel funny walking into a salon.
I cut my families hair at home, but the few times I was busy, my husband snuck off to the barber for a military haircut.
