Hello @socialm8!
Calculus is the study of 'Rates of Change' and was developed in the later half of the seventeenth century by Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Newton. Calculus has two main branches namely Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus.
Differential determines the rate of change of a quantity while integral calculus finds the quantity where the rate of change is know.
Calculus focused on limits, functions, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series.
Applications of differential calculus include computations that involve velocity and acceleration, the slop of a curve as well as optimization. Integral calculus is used in computing volume, arc length, center of mass, work and pressure.
Calculus is used to gain a more precise understanding of the nature of space, time, and motion. For several centuries now, mathematicians and philosophers wrestled with paradoxes involving division by zero or sums of infinitely many numbers.
