The flu is a virus and the common cold is not always a virus (the common cold is sometimes bacterial). We prevent the most popular strains of the flu with immunizations. We prevent the common colds by washing our hands before we eat. Bacterial infections a lot of times are caused by staph or strep. Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, however viral infections are not. Motrin or Tylenol can bring down the fever in either case. And it's best to get checked out by your doctor so that the person is properly treated.
