The Sudanese economy is primitive, it is doing as poorly as usual.
There are three major conflicts in the area, and a threat of another. By far the worst is the conflict in Darfur, which is the western part of Northern Sudan. The government of Sudan is Islamic but Arab, while the people of Darfur are Islamic but Black. The government and its agents have been consistently committing atrocities against the people of Darfur for decades. There is also a conflict between the government, based in the center of northern Sudan, and the people along the coast in north east Sudan.
The south of Sudan, after a civil war that killed millions and a final peaceful referendum, has a violent conflict internally between the new authorities and rival militia(a).
There is also the danger of conflict breaking out in disputed or simply inconvenient areas along the border between north and south. Unfortunately, there is oil in this area which intensifies the potential for conflict.
