Ex-prime minister Taksin Shinwatra opened the eyes of the rural poor to the idea that they have a say in the future of the country, a vote in running the government and a say in their own rural interests. As the current government is not elected, they are staging protests for Parliament to be dissolved and elections (which they feel they would win) to be held.
Pessimistic view:
Billionaire Taksin Shinawatra, is living in exile. His only chance to come back to Thailand is if a sympathetic government is in power. Thus he, and other sympathetic family's and companies are financially supporting this uprising, including paying protesters. During his election he bought himself favor in the countries largest voting block and he is leveraging this power for his own gain.
On the ground 13 years.
