Yahoo Messenger is a great messenger application because it's very slick, and the Emoticons are very clear and easy to see.
You can download the free application through

However if you're like me, you use more than just the Yahoo Instant Messenger. I connect to as many instant message networks as possible so that no matter what people use, they can reach me.
With this in mind, I like IM+. It's a well established, multi-network instant message application that can connect to Yahoo, Google, MSN, Skype, etc.

It costs $10, but in my mind it's well worth it if you rely on IM for anything. It even comes with a few advanced features such as Twitter, GPS integration and voice recording.
