What is the best West Side (Santa Monica/Venice) area sushi restaurant?

Moderately priced preferred, not looking for the 100$ a head options.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Echigo is the best on the West Side. I've eaten at the best sushi restaurants around the world, and i can tell you Echigo is right up there with sushi bars that cost 3x as much.

The blue crab roll is amazing--you'll order two.

Butter fish, bonito, Norwegian mackerel and toro are my favorites at echigo.

It's in a strip mall on the second floor. The parking spaces on street level say 30 minutes, but you can ignore that since nothing else is really open at night.

Get the chef's choice the first time.

The best sushi place I've been to on the West Side is Sushi Roku in Santa Monica. It's got a great contemporary vibe, friendly and quick service, and delicious sushi with classy presentation.

Here's a summary of my most recent dining experience there, which was excellent.

For a group of 3:

Edamame, Cruncy Spicy Tuna with Avocado, Salmon Sashimi, Chilean Seabass in Yuzu Butter (out of this world), Panko Crusted Salmon with Wasabi Cream and Tonkatsu Sauce, and a couple large glasses of Hot Sake "Ozeki".

I'm a sucker for dessert, so we all shared a Chocolate Volcano "Sushi Roku" style with vanilla bean ice cream. Needless to say, it was a wonderful meal and broke down to about $40/person.

I think the quality at Sushi Roku is hit or miss. I very much enjoyed it at the start, but last couple of times I was disappointed. Service was bad, food was ok. Expect more value for my dollar.... try Echigo. 10% of the scene, and 90% better food! :-)
