What is the best web browser and why?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

For me, and what I want to do, it's Firefox.

The top three reasons...

1) Great features right out of the box, and extras are very easy to add on.

Choosing sites and pages you want to visit is easy with the "awesome bar", the bookmarks bar, the most-visited drop down and other handy features.

Features like Adblock Plus are easy to install, and easy to customise. And everything keeps itself up to date with minimum hassle for the user.

2) High level of compatibility - pretty much all sites work!

There are still sites that work better in IE, but Firefox is pretty close now. It works on nearly all sites, and all those important features like toolbars etc come in Firefox versions as well. They're often not available for other browsers.

3) Fast browsing

It takes a little while to load up, but I only do that once or twice a day. After that browsing is fast. In my experience it beats Safari, Opera and IE by a fair margin. I haven't tried Chrome, but Chrome does not fit my other reasons for choosing Firefox.

More and more, I am wondering if it is Chrome and not Firefox. They are fixing Firefox to death. Here is something interesting to do. Start Firefox. Open five tabs. Start Chrome. Open five tabs. Now start Task Manager. Click on processes. Notice the difference. Why is that?

I agree. Chrome will become a good alternative to Firefox. people love Firefox because there are so many cool add-ons.
In the future you will be able to create Chrome extensions so in that way Chrome starts to look more and more like Firefox. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_first_google_chrome_extensions.php

On the other hand the main advantage of Chrome is that every tab is a separate process ( you can see that in your Task Manager).
In the future Firefox will also have a seperate process for each tab. So in that way Firefox starts to look like Chrome

I can't wait for chrome to get add-ons so I can use it as my main browser.

Firefox, I'm a primarily Linux user and that means I can't use Chrome, IE or Safari. I hate being a second class citizen but Firefox works fine on my EEEPC with 512M of memory and on my desktop. I have 12 tabs open now and it's very responsive, it never crashes and as long as Flash behaves I don't have to worry to much about it.

This is a good question, and depending how you define best, is what's important. Lunascape claims to be the fastest Web browser out there.

http://www.lunascape.tv

So, if speed is what you're looking for, you might want to try out Lunascape, which is only for Windows currently.

The other one is Google Chrome, which is also for Windows, yet they have a Mac version in the works.

http://www.google.com/chrome

If you like the button and whistle add ons, then there is Firefox, which has a great browser.

If you use a Mac, you'll probably like Safari or Camino.

I have some great Firefox extensions, so right now I'm hanging in between it and Chrome. Chrome is much faster--mostly because of all the extensions I have in FF. But if I drop the extensions, then it doesn't do what I want it to do, and it still isn't as fast as Chrome.

So I vacillate between them. If I need to do a lot with Ubiquity and know it, I use FF. If I just need to move quickly, I use Chrome.

Either FF needs to fine-tune some things, or Chrome needs extensions. Somewhere in between the two is my ideal browser.
