I see that you are using LiveCD media (Knopix), then why don't you use UBCD (UltimateBootCD) since you intend to use it on Windows machines? This way you'll be in "familiar teritory" with UBCD (Windows environment). TestDisk is one of the many utilities included with UBCD.

M$The only time I've tried to recover data from a repartitioned and reformatted drive and actually *got* something, I used this: DiskInternals Uneraser from http://www.ntfs-recovery.com/ ..they do have other recovery tools too.
The great thing about this software: You can download for free, try scanning the drive, and if it finds files to recover, only then do you need to pay for key to unlock the program and recover files. (So if it can't find anything, you're not out of pocket.)
Well, hope that helps.

M$" Recover even when Windows doesn't recognize the drive-
GetDataBack can even recover your data when the drive is no longer recognized by Windows. It can likewise be used even if all directory information - not just the root directory- is missing. "

Instruction for application
To use the above illustrated software, you should select the right partition which is recognized automatically.
The files to be recovered are listed.
You should select the files to be recovered and choose path for saving. The recovered file should be saved in other partition than the one crashed.
These software main purpose is to recover your files under a crashed partition and is not intended to repair a damaged partition. However it may that the file you are trying to recover are corrupted making it impossible for recovery.
You can now recreate partition using other different methods for example using partition tools or even formatting.
The fastest way to recover data from a damaged partition is to recreate an image of the specific partition.
