What is the best way to play x264/mkv files on my LCD TV from my desktop in another room?
I've read about Popcorn Hour and if someone highly recommends it I'm open to the idea but of course would prefer a free alternative. I also attempted to use TVersity to stream to the xbox 360 as well but maybe I was doing it wrong because I couldn't get it to work. Any help would be tremendously appreciated.
It should be noted that my desktop is relatively new and powerful with a good-to-great graphics card.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Connect to your PC with your Xbox 360
Open up the Media blade in your Xbox 360 Dashboard and Select Media Center.
Select My Videos from the menu
Press the X button on your controller to get the context menu and select More
Now Select Transcode
Now, it's actually transcoding in real time, so if it's skipping or pauses after beginning, press pause for a few minutes before resuming to allow it to buffer.
You didn't say which OS you use. This definitely works with Windows Media Center edition & Vista. Not sure about regular old XP.

I do have XP Pro but I can upgrade to Vista if necessary. I will look into this option and let you know if it works. Thank you very much for the lead.
