What is the best way to overcome shyness when in speaking in front of a group?

What tips can you offer?
Tip for best answer: M$0.37
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Here are some tips that should help you:
1. Take a speaking course or drama class at your local community college.
2. Do volunteer work for your favorite charity. You will make new friends and build your self- esteem as you learn new skills.
3. Take the Dale Carnegie Training course on "Effective Speaking." This is an excellent program for immigrants as they receive great personal support from the instructors and the participants. Everyone in the group wants you to succeed.
4. Join a Toastmasters International club in your area to practice your speaking and listening skills.
5. Next time you are at a social event, introduce yourself to five strangers. If it feels too threatening, ask an extroverted friend to introduce you to five strangers-but do not let your friend take over the conversation. In order to learn you must be involved.
6. If English is your second language and it is important to you to practice your English, the above five activities can provide an opportunity to practice your English. All of the groups mentioned above will welcome you and support you in your English speaking goals.
I hope these tips help:)

Practice in front of a mirror.
Practice with small group, whom you know.
Prepare your speech very well.
Better, if you can hire a coach.
When you actually giving the speech, look over the head of the people to the back one corner of the auditorium to the other corner. It will make the people think you are looking at them when you are actually not looking on anybody particularly.

From experience I can say public speaking is not easy. It took me many years of giving presentations to overcome my fears. The way I was able to overcome my fears was to begin the speech with some kind of joke to capture they audience attention. After I had their attention I would switch gears and present my information in a cool, calm, and collected manner. I would prepare and make sure I was comfortable with the information I was to present. I found out that as long as I was confident in my abilities everything turned out OK. You have to remember that most people are not going to remember a thing you say a week from the presentation unless they are taking notes. So be confident. If I can do it, you can too.

1. Make sure you know what you are going to say to them. In other words, know everything about the topic. This is the most important thing.
2. Practice your speech at home and imagine your audience.
3. Make sure you sound like you deserve your audience attention. If several people are interrupting, stop talking and look right at them. Believe me, someone will ask them to be quiet.
4. Talk loud enough, so everybody can hear you.
5. When speaking in front of a group, dress your best. If you feel comfortable with your appearance, you will sound better.

Practice makes perfect. Practice your piece and talk as much as you can until there comes a time that it comes natural to you, second nature. Peace!
