What is the best way to make your physical address anonymous?

I am trying to receive my mail at my house while keeping the address anonymous.
Is the best way to get a PO BOX, give that address away and forward it to my house? Are there any services that do that already?
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A postal forward would only be valid for one year, and many companies do have access to that information (contrary to what the post office tells you), so a post office is not the best way to go -- unless you physically go pickup mail from the post office box.

The US post office offers a Premium Forwarding Service that costs $10 per week, where they put all your mail (even junk) in a flat-rate envelope and mail it to you once per week. This is not an official forward, and I never had a company figure out my new address.

You could try EarthClassMail (http://www.earthclassmail.com/) which gives you a street address and then scans your mail for you, or mails pieces to your house that you request. That would keep you anonymous.

I used to move to a new state every six months for work, so I'm very familiar with the post office and its forwarding process.

The best way to keep your address away from the public eye? Don't buy a house. Your mortgage seems to be a public record. At least, parts of it...

Kind of defeats the purpose though, doesn't it?

Not really, the house doesn't have to be in your name

Yes, I would suggest a P.O. Box. Although, forwarding to your address, some companies have a way of retrieving this information, so you might be best to use the P.O. Box alone. I have noticed on some envelopes from companies, it's says forward service requested or something on that order, and somehow, they manage to get a hold of your address.

It seems like a PO Box is what you want, but it is against USPS rules to get a PO Box for the purpose of forwarding mail. If you open a PO Box and immediately start forwarding the mail the USPS may object.

Another way is to form a company and have all your mail sent to your company. Your company's address can be your home address, but since the mail is being sent to a company there is no need for your name to be on the mail.

Regardless, you must still provide your physical address to many people any ways: local government, state government, federal government, your employer, your utility companies, your credit card companies, your insurance companies, your banks, "buy.com" etc.

A P.O. box would be the most convenient way to do this.
