What is the best way to learn how to play guitar other than in person lessons?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I would learn by playing tabs, or if your have a talent, play by ear.

I honestly have only been playing guitar for about 6 months, but compared to my friend that has been playing, and taking lessons for about 2 years, I'm just as good has him.

To tune, I do normally use a tuner, it came with my guitar, but sometimes I have to re tune it on my own since I have a bad one.

And, to help you more, play songs that you like, my friend said he didn't like that he couldn't play he style of music when he was taking lessons, and got frustrated, so I would try to stay clear from something that you dislike.

A chord chart

They have some amazing tabs out there, try to go to the ones that have 4-5 stars.

Here is how you read the tabs.

You could also try youtube, to learn anything extra that you are having trouble with.

Good luck!

I find having a lesson to learn notes is beneficial, but boring. To learn guitar quickly, start learning tablature. a good site to search for almost any song in tab is www.911tabs.com

Here is a site to learn how to read tab. http://guitar.about.com/od/tabchordslyrics/ss/read_guitar_tab.htm

After you learn to read tab search for tabs on 911tabs and wa-lah. It will take some time and practice to get the fingering down, but it will come with time. Also, listen to the actual song to get the timing and rhythm down. Or look for someone on youtube playing it and that will help a lot as well.

Also, get a chord chart and practice grabbing those chords and practice from going from a "A" to a "G" to a "C" to a "D" and mix that up.

justinguitar.com is an excellent, FREE website. It has video lessons and goes through every style of playing, from basic open chords to pinched harmonics and improvisation. It also has guitar tabs so you can start playing almost right away.

Also, "guitar for dummies" is an invaluable book if you're a beginner.

Podcasts, just search for guitar. There are many video podcasts which are great resources. If your computer happens to be a Mac, GarageBand '09 comes with guitar and keyboard lessons.
