What is the best way to learn French?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The best way to learn French, or any language for that matter, is to live in a country that speaks the language. If this is not convenient, I would recommend studying core vocabulary words. Focus on commonly used words ONLY at first. For instance, don't bother trying to remember or use the French word for divination unless you have a strong interest in seances.

Besides that, I had one friend from Bulgaria who learned the English language solely from watching The Godfather movies in English. He had watched it so many times in Bulgarian that he knew the words by heart, so when he watched it in English he knew what they were saying in a sense. If you a favorite few movies it is likely that they come with an option to watch en Francais.

Find someone who speaks French to talk to. Don't worry about sounding like an idiot at first, because you surely do.

Rosetta Stone is good if you have the money but not necessary. All of the above will get you started.
