What is the best way to bake salmon?

I have a batch of fresh salmon that needs to be cooked. We are wanting to bake it in the oven, but we are not sure how to go about it. What is the best way to bake salmon? Are there any special spices I should use to enhance the flavor? Is it better to bake it whole fillets or slice it into steaks? I need to know how to prepare it for the oven, what temperature to bake it on, and how long it should be cooked.

Personally what I do is just wrap the salmon in aluminum foil, with some butter (100%, salted - not that awful spreadable variety) which has been softened and mixed with crushed garlic and some fresh tarragon (about 2 tbsp per fillet).

Just keep the fillets whole, spread the buttery mixture on the top, individually wrap each fillet in foil, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt, and a few grinds of fresh black pepper and bake at gas mark 4/ 350F / 180C for 20 mins.

If you are not a fan of tarragon (it has an extremely distinctive taste) then Parsley works well too. Just make sure it's fresh.

I think whole fillets are better for salmon. They are easier to cook to the proper level of doneness w/o overcooking. And I just like the taste and texture better.

I like to cook my salmon with herbed mayonnaise spread on top. Store bought Mayo with whatever fresh or dried herbs you like mixed in. Then cook at 350 for 20-30 mins, checking after 20.

Another fun way is to do a teriyaki thing with soy sauce and canned pineapple. Bake in a dish or aluminum foil. Marinating in advance for a half HR or so will help.
