What is the best way to disinfect?

How can I disinfect my house? What are the best products to use to disinfect my house? How much less likely am I to get a cold or flu if I regularly use a disinfectant in my house?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are several ways to disinfect your home and which methods you choose depends on whether you prefer to use commercial products from the supermarket or natural products which are quite effective, but do not have the pleasant pine or floral aromas that commercial products have.

If you want to keep it natural, you can use hydrogen peroxide or vinegar as sterilizing agents, both are quite effective at cleaning counter tops and other surfaces. They can also be used for disinfecting dishcloths and washing up brushes and cleaning the floor. All of these boring tasks should be done daily.

For general bathroom cleaning bleach is an effective sterilizing agent, but care should be taken when using it as it is an irritant, so rubber gloves should be worn.

If you prefer the commercial products, there are shelves full of different items to choose from in the supermarkets, including the Dettol range which includes an effective antibacterial spray.

Even if you are completely dedicated to cleaning, it is unlikely to prevent you catching colds and flu, most of these bugs are air born or passed from one person to another by coughs and sneezes.

You can left a liberal sprinkling of baking soda on your carpets and left it there overnight. You can vacuumed up in the morning to freshen your carpets. If you live in a humid climate use distilled white vinegar instead.
