What is the best way to decorate a Christmas tree?

It is always a memorable experience decorating the Christmas tree in our house, because we have several cats who still think they are kittens and are so helpful, and an equally mischievous Chihuahua!
This is the method that usually works for me. (after a fashion!)
1) Spend an hour trying to remember where you put the tree and all the ornaments and lights after you took it all down last year.
2) When you have found everything, check first that the lights are working, which they wont be, waste an hour looking for spare bulbs, then go to the shops to buy new lights.
3) When you return, remove cat from the box of decorations, where he has made a bed.
4) Unpack and assemble Christmas tree, (was it as short as that last year?)
5) Arrange new lights on the tree, first removing cat.
6) Retrieve 5 or 6 ornaments from the Chihuahuas "igloo".
7) Remove cat from the middle of the tree.
8) Place the battered looking fairy at the top of the tree, when she falls, off chase the Chihuahua round the room and retrieve her from his mouth.
9) Remove 2 cats from the middle of the tree.
10) Start to arrange the ornaments artistically on the tree, while trying to persuade the cats that you know best where they go, which is not under the sofa, the table or the fridge.
11) Fix the tree the wall at the top, first correcting the lopsided angle and removing all the cats.
12) Switch on the lights, stand back and admire your handiwork before all the cats decide to run off with the rest of the ornaments and the tree collapses!

I believe that decorating a Christmas tree is a personal thing, or a family thing. Everyone has their own tastes on how to decorate their tree for the holidays.
I do it this way: First I put up the tree. Whether it is an artificial tree or one you purchased from the tree lot you have to first put it up. Do not put the tree in the corner or against the wall until you wrap what you want around it. If the tree is not pre-lit, then the lights go on first. Be sure to wrap around the tree from the top to the bottom in order to get the maximum coverage, allowing gravity to help you to put the lights around the tree.
After the lights are on the tree, the garland is next. Pick whatever theme, colors, or styles of garland you wish. You can find tinsel garland and bead garland or you can put popcorn and cranberries on thread and wrap it around. Whatever you wish to put on your tree is perfect for your tree.
Now that you have all the wrapped ornaments on the tree put it where you want it to go. Make sure your location does not block things like the door or television viewing. Once you have it in the perfect place, put the tree skirt under it. After it is placed properly, then decorate away with all the memory baubles and new Christmas ornament favorites that you can find. Unless you're going for a single color, spread the colors out. The more shiny balls you have on the tree, the more it will sparkle because each Christmas ornament then becomes a reflective surface for the lights you put on.
The very top, and very last item, the Star or Angel that will top your tree. This is the piece that is the focal point, make it count!
You can top off the look by using loose tinsel for an even more shimmery look. Just be aware that it does not stay on the tree and can wrap around the head of your vacuum and make it hard to clean up.

Decorating a tree is determined most often by one's personal likes and dislikes. However some people just simply don't know how to begin or what to put on the tree. And the other situation I thought about is someone who is on their own for the first time at Christmas and they don't have a lot of money for trimming the tree. So here are a few ideas I came up with.
1. determine what size tree you will be able to place in your home
2. if your tree doesn't come with a stand then you'll need to purchase one
3. set the tree far enough from the wall to be able to freely wrap all the lights & garland/ ribbon
4. test your light strands BEFORE you put them on the tree, then string them around the tree.
5. move the tree back to the spot you have chosen and begin hanging Christmas ornaments and balls
6. place your topper on your tree
7. you can now add tinsel icicles if you want
IDEAS FOR LOW BUDGET DECORATIONS/ ORNAMENTS
Use a needle and thread to string popcorn garlands for your tree
Use a needle and thread to string cranberry garlands for your tree
Cut paper snow flakes and hang them on the tree with sewing thread
Use candy canes and red paper chains that you can make yourself
Use natural pine cones that you can gather yourself and decorate with glitter or spray paint then hang with sewing thread or thin twine
string colored pasta, or dip plain pasta in glue and glitter then string it for your tree
OTHER IDEAS
Sports themed trees, BASEBALL CARDS, with your favorite baseball cap as your topper
Add your Christmas cards to your tree as you receive them.
Purchase inexpensive plastic Christmas balls and decorate each one with a letter of the Alphabet or your college's initials, family and friends names. or just paint a snowflake on each one.
plastic cookie cutters and cooking utensils, coasters, pot holders (for the cook)
Fishing lures, small fish nets, toy fish, net you purchase at the bait shop (for the fisherman)
Hang old CD/s (use ribbon or fishing line) for a bold shiny look.
