What is the best way to cook a turnip?

What is your favorite turnip recipe?
I have decided that this week I am going to use turnips in something I cook not because I love turnips but because I have no idea about turnips and I just adventurously bought a few of them at the grocery store. Would you help me expand my palette and give me some turnip tips?

The best way to cook turnip is to steam them. This method helps retain their nutritional value as well as saves time as it is quick.
Scrap the turnip and cut them into tiny cubes . Put them in a vessel without water ,add little salt and steam them in a pressure cooker ,just for one whistle or Microwave them for just 5 minutes.

Here is a delicious recipe which i used to make and is a favorite among our dear and near.

Turnip Curry:
----------------

Ingredients:
---------------

1/2 kg tender turnip
1/2 coconut
1/2 bunch coriander leaves
6 to 7 green chillies
5 to 6 pods garlic
2 tbsp thick curds
salt to taste
Mustard and curry leaves for seasoning.

Method:
---------
Scrap turnip and cut them into tiny cubes and steam them with a little salt.

Grind coconut along with garlic and green chillies . Remove the coconut paste and then grind coriander leaves.

Heat oil , put mustard and curry leaves with a pinch of turmeric powder. When mustard splutters add coconut paste . Fry for a while. add coriander leaves paste with little water. fry for a while . Now add the cooked turnip to the masala with the required amount of salt and mix well.cover and cook till the turnip mixes well with the masala. little more water can be added if necessary. After cooking for 5 - 10 mins. add 2 tbsp thick curds to the vegetable mix well. Cover and cook until the vegetable is done.serve this hot . This is very tasty and goes well with both Indian Bread( chappathies and roties) and rice.

I love roasted parsnips and turnips. The method is basically the same for both – the parsnip has a slightly sweeter taste.

Ingredients:
1 Turnip
3 tablespoons of honey
4 tablespoons of butter
Salt and pepper.

Cooking Method:
Peel and clean the turnip – cutting off the top and bottom.
Slice into ‘French fry’ shapes.
Place in a baking pan.
Pour the honey all over the turnip ‘french fries’ evenly.
Cut up the butter into small cubes and place on top of turnips evenly.
Bake in an oven at 350 degree Fahrenheit for about 35-40 minutes. You can vary the time if you want crispier results.

Serving Suggestions:
This or parsnips is great with Roast Beef, Mashed Potatoes and Yorkshire Puddings.
You can combine the parsnip and turnip if you want.

My favorite way is to make a big pot of beef stew and throw in turnips cut into little triangles (so the kids know they aren't potatos).

They end up so juicy and soft they are just amazing. I also throw them in with corned beef and cabbage.

The crock pot does wonders with turnips :D

I'm not much of a cook; but, I like turnips and can answer this one. Boiling loses much of the flavor and nutrients, although adding them to a stew works well.

The best way to enjoy turnips for turnips sake, as a vegetable side dish for instance, is to cook them in a microwave. Peel them and cut them in cubes (roughly) and put them in a microwave cooking/steaming bag. These look like sandwich bags or freezer bags but are specifically designed for cooking items in a microwave. The moisture from the turnip is enough for the steaming effect. No nutrients or flavor is lost!

It works with many other vegetables too; but, not all.

My favorite way to cook a turnip is too peel and cut up in small pieces. Add to a cooking pot and add water to cover. Sprinkle a small bit of salt and boil until very tender. Drain. Beat with electric beater (like you would whip potatoes) until there are no lumps - add a teaspsoon of butter.
Goes well with any winter menu.

Turnips are actually a good vegetable substitute in recipes which use potatoes. Using turnips in place of potatoes allows people on a low carb way of eating to enjoy some of the recipes they might not be able to consume other wise. If you like Hash Brown Casserole, you can grate turnips to use in place of the potatoes in the casserole

Here is my favorite turnip recipe!

1. Boil whole 4 or 5 large turnips.
2. Take them up, drain them, cut a slice from the top, and scoop out the middle.
3. Beat the pulp which has been taken out with a little butter, flour, pepper, salt, and cream, and add the yolk of an egg.
4. Fill the empty spaces with the mixture, put the tops on again, and brush them over with beaten egg.
5. Brown them in a brisk oven, and serve very hot.
6. Time to boil, from three-quarters to an hour and a half.
