What is the best way to convert PAL footage to NTSC on the mac?

A friend of mine from the UK sent me a DVD with some home movies on it and wants me to convert it to NTSC for his family over here in North America. I'm just curious as to what the best method would be to do so? I know toast can do the conversion so is it easiest to just rip the disc and throw it into toast and let it handle it? Or are their other apps that will handle it better? I know that if I go the toast route I lose my menus and the like which is less ideal.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are already many discussions in forums regarding this topic in the net. You can find more details if you search through Google.

I have provided links for the forums, so take some time to look through those discussions. :)

Here is an easier method.

1. Extract DVD via MacTheRipper to the HD.

2. Launch MPEG Streamclip for individual streams. Fix Timecode breaks. Use presets settings.

3. Recompress to DVD via Compressor

4. Launch DVDSP 2.0 and recompose menu. Correct LBX aspect ratio here via each video stream.

Also there is a software called Nattress Standards Converter which is mentioned in some discussions, though it is not free.

If the above methods does not come handy to you, then I recommend you using Toast 10 which is very easy to use with the drag and drop feature.

I am not familiar with Toast / Mac, but according to the main site, it says
----quote----
* Enjoy over 20 new stunning DVD and Blu-ray Disc menu styles
----/quote----
which means I think you can create custom menus for your friend's family :)

Wonderful! Thank you so much. One QUICK follow up:
"2. Launch MPEG Streamclip for individual streams. Fix Timecode breaks. Use presets settings. "
what are these presets settings you mention?

I'll give a definite nod to using MPEG Streamclip - the results it generates sometimes even surpass the $500 software we use at work to convert NTSC to PAL and back.

The easiest way is to use a DVD Ripper. Personally, I've used Moyea Video Converter for Mac with which I successfully converted between PAL and NTSC footages. BTW, this software is very easy to operate with uncluttered buttons distributed on its main interface.

Best of luck!
