What is the best way to convert a CD to an MP3 file?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

few ways to go about this using itunes...

if your settings for importing a cd isnt already set to mp3 encoder then by all means.. set it.

It depends on the operating system you use, but Windows Media Player, iTunes, Winamp, DBpowerAmp, and others are great ways to do it.

I use ITunes- You have to change a preference under Advanced-Import Format but you can switch that to mp3 and the you will have an option to convert the file to mp3.

Insert it into any Windows PC and it will convert it automatically if you've set your Windows Media Player properly.

There is actually quite a few free software packages that will rip CDs straight into MP3s. iTunes is quick and simple. Nero also had a fairly decent one built into their burning software, but I havn't used it in a number of years.

Exact Audio Copy and Lame are generally regarded as the best by the audiophiles but they can be a bit tricky to set up.

Windows Media Player, iTunes and WinAmp will all do it.

Keep in mind that MP3 is lossy compression which means you lose data ripping to an MP3 file. Set the bitrate to 320K for the best sounding MP3. This will create a larger file, but with 500GB HDDs for less than $100 who cares? Which begs the question, who needs MP3s anymore? They sound like crap compared to the CD no matter what you do.
