What is the best way to control your desktop remotely for free?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It's super easy, and best of all it fits your requirement of being free. I really prefer it to other solutions because of how easy it is to setup and use. You only have to install software on the PC (or Mac) that you want to be able to remote control (and it sets up easy), then you go to logmein.com and sign in with your username and password and bing-bang-boom you are looking at that computer. I use this as a support tool for my family too, there doesn't seem to be a limit of computers you can have associated (and yes all free) so I install the client on my Mom's, Grandma's, and other family members computers, then when they need help I just pop on and can help them out.
I don't have an iPhone, but they advertise and iPhone app that will let you control from your phone. But you can do this from any computer you can get an internet connection. I use it to get around the filters that they have installed at my work, I "log in" to my home computer and have my browser up as a seperate tab inside my work browser and I almost can't tell its actually a different computer.
The only "cons" I can think of are that the logmein free does not allow for drag and drop file transfer, or sound sharing, but those issues were not important to me. If I need a file I either email it to myself or use orb (www.orb.com) to file-browse.
I've included a link to a screen-shot of me using it to answer this question.

M$Another popular solution is the VNC protocol, which is truly open-source and multiplatform, meaning you can use it on any operating system, be it Windows, Mac or Linux based. It's somewhat slower in responsiveness and resource consumption though, especially on Windows machines. There's a variety of client/server combos that support it, my favourite being TightVNC ( http://www.tightvnc.com/ )

I haven't used this sort of software before so I'm not sure which is best. You can check them out anyway.
