The first STEP in becoming a Pastry Chef, is to decide if this career is the right path for you. If you are fully committed to this culinary career one of the first things you should do is to contact some of your local restaurants or bakery outlets to inquire about volunteering for an apprenticeship program. In this way you can learn and study the basics of pastry preparation. Be inquisitive and curious about the details in pastry preparation by your mentor, The Master Pastry Chef.

If their is no available apprenticeship program in your area, I suggest you enroll at the Culinary Arts Institute of America, these culinary institute have campuses in New York & California. But first things first is to check for local listings of available culinary institute to save on costs.

I Googled the question. Wisegeek.com says there are two ways culinary school or apprenticeship. For an apprenticeship, you need to find a bakery looking for an assistance pastry chef, or you can volunteer in return for training from the pastry chef. The other option is to go to culinary school. There are several top culinary schools in the United States, like Le Cordon Bleu. Also, many community colleges offer a pastry chef program. Going to culinary school does take longer than an apprenticeship, but you get more complete training.
