What is the best way to avoid getting H1N1? Is washing your hands a million times a day enough?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This virus is spread like any other virus- through coughing and sneezing, and sometimes by touching something that has the virus on it, and then touching your mouth or nose. Also like any other virus, proper handwashing is the best method of prevention. You need to wash your hands for a minimum of 10 seconds. You can also use alcohol based hand sanitizer. Other things you can do if you are infeced is to make sure you cover both your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. You also need to make sure that you do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth as this is the way germs spread. Prevention also includes avoiding any type of close contact with someone that is infected. If you have symptoms, you should stay home for at least 24 hours after fever has disappeared. If you are infected you should also keep away from others to prevent spread of the infection. Let me answer your question with a question. How worried are you?
Green, Yellow, Orange or Red . . .

Green, chances are you won't get it so why worry? I mean yea sure you want to wash your hands and stuff, but you don't need to get obsessive about it.

Yellow, Wash your hands before eating & after touching other people. Make sure you are getting your daily intake of vitamin C. Eat foods that are good for your immune system and get plenty of sleep. (I try to stay at this level in flu and cold season, so this is what I am doing right now)

Orange, as above and, avoid crouded places, use gloves when you can, if you have to shop do it at the least busy times of day, try to maintain a personal space of 2 yards when you can. Work from home if you are able.

Red, as above and, use a surgical mask and gloves whenever you go out, you may get some strange looks but they are very effective. Avoid having guests in your household. Get rid of children (Just kidding!) Homeschool children if you can.

Hello,

Washing your hands is an excellent way to help prevent the spread of H1N1. You may also use hand sanitizers when soap and water aren't available. The Center for Disease control makes these recommendations:

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
Take everyday actions to stay healthy.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.

Find healthy ways to deal with stress and anxiety.

Besides these talk with your doctor about getting the new vaccine for H1N1. In the beginning of vaccinations it may be harder to get but everyone will get vaccinated that desires to do so. They will vaccinate high risk people first then follow up with others for vaccination.
