What is the best way to (inexpensively) drive traffic to my blog site?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Why not try signing up for blogger events and blog networking events or meetups. It's always good to network with other like blogging friends who can link to your blog. Usually these blogging friends write about similar subjects.
For instance, I just saw this site called Blog Float http://www.blogfloat.com where bloggers can network online.
You might want to check out http://www.twingly.com and ping your blog on Twingly Ping.
How pinging your blog on Twingly works:
1. Ping your blog at Twingly.com
2.Twingly notifies the news site that you've linked to it.
3. The news site links back to you.
You may want to join a bulletin board like Board Reader or Tangler and talk about your blog in bulletin boards.

Tangler

You should add a signature, so people know your blog. Also create a tagline. So, if you blog about recipes, say something like: "A new recipe a day" etc. that will catch people's attention.
My Thoughts.

M$In other words, you have to have a product before you can market it.

I am subscribed to the RSS feed and receive numerous detailed daily updates with various blog tips. It has an excellent Q&A section that is really, really helpful . Looks like the guy that is behind the site "lives" in internet.

I don't expect to provide you a lot of usefull information that you don't already know..just something to read till someone with a better answer comes back to you.

M$If, on the other hand, you can find some niche that you feel that you can address while still offering some unique value, you'll stand a better chance of starting to build a following, and not just anonymous search traffic. Do you just want to stream visitors through (such as on their way to advertising), or do you want to build a brand, and have regular readers who come to expect high quality stuff from you? Those would be the kind of people who might ultimately purchase other products (a book maybe, or t-shirts or other merchandise) from you because they want to support you.
The two are very different strategies. I prefer the latter.
Assuming that you find a particular topic you want to identify with, then I agree with the other folks here -- go out of your way to own that space in all the other online forums you can find. I freely admit, I showed up here at Mahalo figuring to camp out on any Shakespeare related questions. Little disappointed that there aren't any, but hey :).
Good luck!

1. Build a strong, solid business foundation. Design a business plan, marketing plan, ideal client profile and 30-second elevator speech.
2. Be consistent and “brand” your company. Use the same colors, logo, motto, etc. everywhere on your business web site!
3. Make your business web site trustable.
4. Create policies that build trust: customer service, code of ethics and newsletter privacy policy.
5. Ask your web master to name each of your pages using a keyword you have supplied them with.
6. Offer added values on your business web site that make sense to your business and ideal client. This can include affiliate programs, books, and recommended links to web sites.
7. Add a “favorites or bookmark this site” script to some of your business web site pages.
8. Add a "Recommend This Site" on your site. If someone visits your business Web site and knows someone else who may appreciate it, this feature will e-mail the page's link to a recipient.
9. If you have pages on your business web site that you update monthly (like an articles page or recommended links page) say so on the page.
10. Join a few Web rings. For additional information, visit WebRing and Bravenet.
11. Provide a subscription box, to your e-zine or business announcement list, on your most viewed business web site pages.
12. On large business web sites, create a "What's New Page" or even better, ask your web designer to design a "Site Map" for your visitors.

M$Other cheap ways include:
1. Submitting stories to social bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit, Delicious, etc.
2. Writing stories and blog posts about things that people are actually searching for. Direct traffic is the hardest thing to get (as people don't automatically know your site). If a post of yours gets ranked highly in google
for a term people are searching for, they will click on your link and get
introduced to you that way.
3. If you have a quality post about a specific subject, you can also try submitting it to a Mahalo page.
4. Creating an RSS feed is a great idea, and can also help Google see and index your blog posts.

You should also get your blog involved with things like Digg (http://digg.com/) so that readers can 'favorite' your content and also pass it on to others around the web.
Word of mouth is the key with blogs.

Putting a "bookmark us" link on your page really helps.
Also, do you have an advertizing budget? If you do, why not advertize a little?
What is the theme of your blog? You might be able to find some other blogs or websites that are willing to link to you for just a buck.
I strongly suggest you don't do link trades unless they are three way link trades and not in a closed loop.
One very dishonest way to get traffic is by doing three way link trades and then taking the links down after a week. It's dishonest and I've never done it because it bothers me, and I actually depend on my reputation to keep getting link trades and sales. But this does increase perceived importance in google.
Finally, writing content that google will be willing to index really helps. Writing content that someone might search for in google will also really help. Inserting the correct keywords frequently will improve your traffic and position in google searches.

M$I don't really have hardly any advertising budget, I bought a domain, and update it semi-regularly, on average about 4-5 times a month is all I have time for writing and the content is rather full spectrum.
Thanks though I'll look into the link trading idea, I hadn't thought about that since I'm fairly new to it.
(and I hate link spammers as much as anyone, if someone asks to see the link or is curious enough, it's not hard to find)

M$In addition, it's important to make sure that your content is actually *visible* to search engines. For example, if your content is contained in an image file with a non-descriptive name (such as image1.jpg) and it isn't otherwise identified (by "alt" or "meta" tags), it will essentially be invisible to search engines.
Google provides a lot of great related information here:

Also, Google Analytics is an awesome (and free) tool for tracking your page statistics over time:
