What is the best twitter app for mac?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm a big fan of TweetDeck. You can find information about it at:

http://www.tweetdeck.com/

It's a free Adobe AIR based application (so it's actually cross-platform: Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux) that offers a lot of great features. Here's a summary from the TweetDeck Web site:

"TweetDeck enables users to split their main feed (All Tweets) into topic or group specific columns allowing a broader overview of tweets. The default columns can contain All Tweets from your timeline, @replies directed to you and direct messages. The GROUP, SEARCH and REPLIES buttons then allow the user to make up additional columns populated from the live tweet information. Once created these additional columns will automatically update allowing the user to keep track of a twitter threads far easier."

Here's a screenshot so you can see what the interface looks like:

If the screen real estate requirements of the TweetDeck application are too much for you, give twhirl a try:

It's another free Adobe AIR based application which offers a lot of nice features. In particular, if you manage multiple Twitter accounts, twhirl allows you to log into more than one account simultaneously. Here's a screenshot:

Overall, both of these applications offer a lot of convenient features that the Twitter web interface has yet to implement, and either is a good choice. My personal preference is for TweetDeck (although I have previously used twhirl too), but since they offer somewhat different interfaces and feature sets, you should try both and see which you prefer.

If you are comfortable working in a command line setting, a lightweight and efficient client is TTYtter. It works well for me on an older MacBook with a current Perl implementation.
