What is the best time of year to book a trip to Hawaii? Which island should I stay on?

Several years ago I attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa (in Honolulu on Oahu). I found the best prices for airfare where the few weeks leading up to Thanksgiving or the period from January through March (going into Spring Break but before it starts). I would fly toward the middle of the week (Tues, Wed, Thur) and usually get a ticket for half what other people were getting.
I would say Oahu has a lot of stuff to do, but is very touristy. Maui I have heard is pretty cool as well as the Big Island (Hawaii). The smaller islands I guess are quite pretty but you kind of need to know what you are doing to really save and get the most out of the trip.

The thanksgiving thing is because people are leaving here for the holiday so there is probably a passenger imbalance.
The January through March thing is called Winter. Spring screws up the waves. Spring and summer are for snorkelers. Flying the middle of the week just makes good sense.
I think, most people are happy to go to Oahu the first time, then fly direct to the outer islands on return trips. Different levels of conciseness.
