What is the best thing to keep my sunburn from peeling?

I used sunblock, but some how I didn't get it applied to my back well. I have a terrible, painful sunburn. How do I keep it from peeling?

These are some tips to avoid sunburn from peeling:

1. Use aloe vera because of it has a healing power. You can use a prepackaged lotion or apply directly from a plant if you have one available. The oil from the plant will make your skin feel better and decrease the flaking and peeling.

2. Drink aspirin for it can really stop a sunburn in its tracks if taken earlier. It also help reduce the swelling and redness of the skin and alleviate the pain felt. For best result, it should be taken very few hours on the first day of the sunburn.

3. Use an apple cidar vinegar bath and moisten your sunburnt skin with it. This is considered one of the most effective way to prevent peeling. You can purchase one at a local health store. Mix this with your bath and just lie back relax and let the healing process begin. The vinegar will help restore the healthy ph balance of your skin which is very important in healing process.

4. Keep away from the sun until you are fully healed to avoid any serious and increase risk of skin cancer. Wait until the sunburn is fully healed before exposing yourself into the sun again.

Aloe vera gel is really good for cooling and healing the sunburn. Hospitals use it on their burn victims because aloe vera contains aloectin B which accelerates the immune system's ability to recover from the burn.

@buttonpusher recommends taking a shower to open up the pores before applying the gel. answers/health/what-is-the-best-way-to-treat-a-sunburn

You can use fresh aloe vera if you have a plant. Just break the leaf and apply the "fresh goo" topically.

@jjwalsh advises against oral ingestion as there may be adverse effects.

Actually traditional lotion contains oils that trap the heat in your skin, and it doesn't "cure" your skin from peeling, it just prolongs the time when it will start. You shouldn't use lotion; real aloe is the best—buy it from a health foods store, sometimes aloe from a cheap drug store has other stuff in it that isn't real aloe. Other than that, if the sunburn is going to peel, it's going to peel no matter what you do—you've already killed the skin.

Also, if you're itching or your skin really hurts, you can use hydrocortisone cream. That will help reduce peeling, since you're not scratching at yourself all day.

It's all about keeping your skin moisturized. Aloe Vera or even plain lotion will help. Also, drink plenty of water.

As other posters have said Aloe Vera is great although any kind of moisturizer will also work. Also make sure that you wear loose clothing on the burnt area as obviously the tighter your clothes are the more likely they are to rub when you move which will increase the chances of it peeling. I got really awful sun burn on holiday last year as it turned out my sun cream had gone off and therefore didn't work so I know how you feel.

Do not try to prick it or peel it, if you do so it will not heal . When it is left as it is it heals in no time. Apply flowered aloevera plant sap twice a day. And also better if you can apply cotton dipped with glycerin.

It probably won't stop it from peeling but if you want something thats extremely effective to relieve sunburn then get some high quality Emu oil.
The stuff is amazing and has a multitude of benefical uses.
Emu oil surpasses other forms of sunburn relief because of its natural ability to penetrate the human skin with moisture more deeply and effectively than other sunburn salves, relieving the tightness and burning--and it's completely natural.
Emu oil naturally contains Vitamin E, which is a major antioxidant and healing agent; Vitamin A, a known skin repairer and antioxidant.
The natural bacteriostatic, anti-inflammatory and cell regeneration properties of emu oil help repair minor wounds quickly and with less scarring.
Make sure to use Pure certified Emu oil, theres alot of inferior Emu oil on the market.
This is a great reference guide to the benefits of Emu oil,

Its worth looking into for many other reasons besides your sunburn.
