What is the best stationary machine for cardio?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

For pure cardio, the most popular thing - certainly in gyms - are the elliptical machines.

I'm personally a bigger fan of running on a treadmill because it's more natural than getting the feel for running on an elliptical. Although the lines are much longer for those machines, so I'm probably wrong.

The reason people prefer elliptical machines to treadmills is because it's gentler on your knees. But I don't think that running on a treadmill is that detrimental provided you stretch and aren't in danger of ligament damage.

Here's a nice article detailing some of the differences between the various machines: http://askthetrainer.com/best-cardio-machines.html

One machine that is often overlooked is the simple rowing machine (with two pneumatic pistons- one for each hand) It's got a lot going for it. Unfortunately, it seems to have fallen out of favor- maybe it's just not sexy enough. But Consider these things:
1) It's cheaper than anything else to buy if you can still find one.
2) It costs nothing to operate (Doesnt use electricity)
3) Maintenance issues are non-existent
4)Non impact aerobic; very easy on the back and legs.
5)Combines adjustable degree of resistance training
6)Great for core and obiques.
7) Provides upper body strengthening and leg strengthening depending on how you choose to pull.
Takes up minimum space for storage.

And rowing is fun. Very little distracting noise so its quiet. Or, little interference with an mp3 player.
You can watch TV too.

I like spin classes the most.

Elliptical and the treadmill are good, but I think they're kind of boring (so is just regular bicycle).

But if you get a good teacher and someone who has a good taste in exercise music, then the right class can be a great workout.
