M$Delicious 2.0 is great for saving bookmarks to the web and synchronizing with all your browsers. I started using Delicious as part of a college class and still use it to save all my bookmarks. You can tag and comment to your hearts content. You can classify your bookmarks as private or public, you can subscribe to other users and you can set up RSS feeds for tags or users. You can also create a tag cloud and embed the cloud in web pages. Ma.gnolia has similar functionality, but after a significant loss of data last year, access to the site is by invitation only, which limits the site's usefulness.
StumbleUpon, Digg and Reddit are very similar in that they are used to promote interesting web content. Many bloggers have the buttons embeded in their posts in hopes of receiving enough attention to get new subscribers. These sites are limited in that you are promoting current nesw, videos or images. The sites each have various algorithms for stories to move up or down the featured pages. Like search engines, manipulating the popularity of an item by violating the terms of service can get you and the site you are promoting banned. There are dozens more sites in this category. Just click on the share button on popular news or blog sites to see the dozens there are to chose from. A limitation you learn after using the sites a bit is each restricts to a subset of categories they want to receive topics for. They may miss trending topics outside of their chosen categories as a result.
The next generation Social Bookmarking sites are now emerging. These sites such as GetGlue from AdaptiveBlue and Evri, which now also includes recent acquisition Twine.com, allow you to highlight objects on the web that you are interested in, then using Semantic Web technologies, these sites make suggestions of other topics or objects you may be interested in. Like earlier generation technologies these sites support users' creation of networks of followers.
Today I use Delicious for all my bookmarks, Reddit, Digg and Stumble here and there to promote interesting tech stories and GetGlue for fun. I never really like Twine.com and am looking forward to giving Evri a test drive.
