You didn't mention a price limit, but asked for the "best". I'll admit I'm partial to the Benelli since we used these in Iraq. However, less expensive semi-auto shotguns would be very effective.
And I disagree with the theory that shotguns are bad for personal defense. Have you ever shot a pistol? Have you shot one at a target more than a few yards away? How about a moving target? It's not like you see in movies. It is very easy to jerk the trigger, anticipate recoil, etc. One twitch and your little bullet hits nothing but your wall.
Yes, a shotgun can be "messy", but with the spread of the shot you really have to try in order to miss. We're talking about home defense, so the condition of my walls aren't really a priority. Buckshot will also be less likely to penetrate said walls than most pistol rounds.
In the end, pick what you (and your family) are most comfortable with.
