What is the best "series" you ever watched? Searching for something different!

We've all but given up on regular television but occassionally like to vegetate in front of the TV. Recently have purchased several "series" that enjoy watching without commercials etc... Searching for something different. What are the best television series you can suggest buying? Needs to be family oriented - no adult content, no horror, no extreme violence.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00

Lately, I've been really into watching various TV series from my youth. For whatever reason, I seem to find them more enjoyable than a lot of things on TV these days. Here are a few of my favorites:

1.) ALF- great family sitcom, with a quirky twist. I loved this show as a child, and I still love it today.
http://www.amazon.com/ALF-Season-Mihaly-Michu-Meszaros/dp/B0002DB5N6/ref=pd_sim_d_1

2.) Dinosaurs- well-done and humorous show. I liked it when I was younger, and now, watching it as an adult, I have realized that they subtly covered some serious topics.
http://www.amazon.com/Dinosaurs-Complete-First-Second-Seasons/dp/B000E8NRVC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1231188967&sr=8-1

3.) Family Ties- another great, family-oriented show.
http://www.amazon.com/Family-Ties-Complete-First-Season/dp/B000K7UBXE/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1231189341&sr=1-12

4.) The Wonder Years- one of my all-time favorite shows, ever. It's just so nostalgic and full of heart.
http://www.amazon.com/Best-Wonder-Years-Dan-Lauria/dp/6305053987/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1231189415&sr=1-1

5.) Punky Brewster- fun, family-friendly sitcom. This show always makes me smile.
http://www.amazon.com/Punky-Brewster-Soleil-Moon-Frye/dp/B00020X83Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1231189551&sr=1-2

If none of those interest you, you should consider some shows that you personally loved as you were growing up that you can share with your children. It's a great way to bond.

The recent seasons of BBC's Doctor Who are excellent. The Doctor, uses no violence and cares for even his enemies. He keeps a positive attitude at all times and manages to save the universe with little more than a sonic screwdriver. He travels through the universe in a British Police box with a human sidekick. For great story, funny dialogue and a groovy 60's Sci-Fi feel go for Doctor Who.

Stargate SG-1 is another great series with plenty of seasons to watch. You may also want to broaden your horizon's with a little Anime. Cowboy Bebop will not disappoint can be somewhat racy at times and does include violence but the series is generally positive, fun and funny. Its about a group of Space Bounty Hunters who never have enough to eat and travel across the galaxy chasing bounties. Start watching now and you'll be ready when the feature length movie comes out with Keanu Reeves playing the main character.

The Muppet Show is always good family oriented fun and there were so many great singers and actors that appeared on the show during a time when comedy was subtler and slightly more appreciated than it is now. Now comedy is all about shock value, but during the late 1970's and early 1980's it was just silly, like the Cannon Ball Run films and Smokey and the Bandit. Another good family oriented series is still Little House on the Prairie. Such great values taught in that show.

If you or your family are fans of Science Fiction at all, then Red Dwarf is a great television series to get into. It's from the BBC and lasted 8 seasons and is consistently funny, amusing, thought-provoking, and clever. You can rent most of the series at your local video store or through Netflix.

Try "The Universe" on The History Channel or "When We Left Earth; The NASA Missions" on The Discovery Channel. They both provide great education disguised as entertainment.

If you can find it, Remington Steele was a great series. I think it starred Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist.
Moonlighting was pretty good but some episodes might be PG. It starred Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepard.
If you are in to westerns, try finding Rawhide and see Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates.

Hmm, Firefly is about as close to family-oriented as I can think of, either that or Monty Python's Flying Circus if you enjoy British comedy.

If you do choose to venture into adult content, I'd suggest Dead Like Me, True Blood, or Battlestar Galactica.

A British series called 'Coupling'. Like Friends but much funnier.

They tried to make an American version which failed miserably, but the British one was actually funny.

I like Psych. It's a comedy/mystery, but the violent or gory stuff is not really shown. There are also flashbacks to when the main character and his best friend were kids, as well as a portrayal of adult children in contact with their parents, so that's good if it's a multi-generational group watching. (It has had maybe one 'love scene' and it was the kind of tame stuff you could see on TV 20 years ago, so I don't really count that as adult content).

Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine are great if you're open to science fiction. They bring up issues that a lot of other shows don't.

For nonfiction, I love Rough Science. It's a British show that is sort of like Survivor with scientists, and instead of snippy backbiting, they work together to do really hard challenges (set up efficient water purifiers, make a lantern that works underwater, make musical instruments) using stuff they find on an island. It's really entertaining (more than it sounds).

I love this show too and I watch it every week. However, I don't think it is a show that the person is asking about b/c it does have inappropriate scenes for young kids. I would find out how old the kids are and then suggest this show.

SportsNight, from the creator of the West Wing, as a great series while it lasted. I watched it on DVD via Netflix a couple years ago.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel were both good series, but they do a little bit violate your "no horror" and "no violence" requirements.

Babylon 5 has a cult following, but I never was able to get into it too much.

Firefly was outstanding, but there are a couple scenes that will violate your "family friendly" requirement, and more than a couple that will violate your "no violence" requirement.

I really enjoyed Roswell when it was on.

The original Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock are both available on DVD now.

House is a great medical drama, but I'm not sure I would consider it appropriate for children.

Hope that helps a little....
