What is the best screencast creation software for Windows?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

SnagIt will do screen captures, but if you want to create video of what you are showing on a screen (such as recording a demo of software), the best choice is Camtasia (also by TechSmith) http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp

I've been using it for over 3 years and have tried other products and it's the best I've found. It was difficult just to try and buy Captivate about a year ago, maybe that's changed.

I've only tried one piece of screen cast software - Jing. It's great, in fact i'm using it right now while I type this answer.

You run the program and it gives you an easy interface to capture a customised size section of your monitor. Press record and off you go.
Once you're done you can upload to jing's servers for embedding, or you can download the file (swf format). Works really nicely. Highly recommended.

Oh and it's free, with 2GB storage and bandwidth.

I've tried jing but it wasn't as flexible with types of file output, and we want to host the video ourselves. It will depend on what you are trying to accomplish, then pick the tool...
