For my money, the best science fiction film is probably Blade Runner. It was released in 1982 and directed by Ridley Scott. The movie is based on a short story by Philip K Dick.
The story takes place in the future, where androids called "replicants," who are indistinguishable from humans, have been created. However, these androids are not permitted on Earth; they are used by humanity to do all the more dangerous tasks that humans could die performing. For the replicants who decide to escape to Earth, there is a group of operators called blade runners, who hunt down these replicants and forcibly "retire" them.
Harrison Ford stars as Decker, a blade runner hunting a group of escaped replicants in future LA. These replicants are on Earth trying to extend their lifespan so they can grow and experience more emotions. As Decker is hunting them the situation becomes far more complicated, especially once he starts to fall for a replicant. Rutger Hauer plays Roy and Daryl Hannah is Pris, both replicants that Decker is hunting. Edward James Olmos has the small but pivotal role of Gaff.
The are so many aspects of Blade Runner that make it an incredible film. The cast is incredible, the vision of the future is beautifully rendered, the soundtrack is impeccable. And the story is classic science fiction at its best. Other contenders for the top position: Metropolis, A Clockwork Orange, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, E.T., The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Planet of the Apes, the original Star Wars and Alien.
