My best friend of the same name introduced me to Taylor Port, an absolutely fantastic port. I'm a big fan of their Tawny, but to get under $20 you'll probably have to go with a vintage late-bottled port, which will still be excellent.

The Wine Doctor (see link below) describes it as having a "feminine, elegant style, alongside dark fruits and beetroot notes."

I would second the recommendation of Taylor's LVB (late-bottled vintage). If you can find a 2000 vintage, grab it. Graham's Six Grapes is another common one at about the same price point, but I'd vote for the Taylor.

As for tawny ports, if your local stores carry Warre's 10 year tawny, that should be around $20 and is quite nice as well.

(Whether you'd prefer ruby or tawny is a matter of personal preference...)

We lovvvve Ficklin's Tawny Port. Depending on where you get it, it might be over $20. Ficklin's Tinta Port is nearly as good and can often be found for $15. We've tried 5 or 6 other inexpensive ports and have never been satisfied. Ficklin's just seems much thicker and richer. If you can, try the Tawny Port because it is fantastic in every way. Great golden and burgundy colors that flicker in the light, complex and fruity smell, and amazing sweet and smokey flavor with a light but thick texture.

The only other port we get now is Krohn's White Port. It isn't quite as delicious, but is available at a store that is closer to us. It is crisper and lighter than Ficklin's. It is kind of like the difference between red and white grapes.

Well, this is more of an aperitif wine than a port wine, but I always enjoy a glass of Lillet, especially chilled with a slice of orange.

to be 100% honest you just need to go to your local BevMo or Trader Joe's and pick something out.

jason why would you write a paragraph telling me to not answer questions? Lots of people don't know of these two great stores.

Thanks for trying, but this is not a very helpful answer. Please try and only post when you can add true value that answers the question or solves the person's problem. Everyone knows they can "google it" or visit the store. They are looking for an answer here on Mahalo Answers, and our job is to give them the goods!!!

Mahalo for trying!

Avoid wine that comes in a box, especially if it is delivered to you with the comment, "Sure it's Port... any port in a storm, eh captain?"

The only exception to this is if you are a piloting a boat at the time of said delivery.
